Drum Lesson 12: Rhythm Studies (Old)
Firstly we were corrected right from our warm up. He told us to do alternate stroking, so we just hit without counting... and yeah we got corrected for it... we were told to set a rhytm, sub-divide and then do the alternate stroking.. he comment that my stick control was lousy also.. too sloppy and too much un-necessary movement... no choice.... i use to dance.. so i tend to do a lot of extra... like mm say even when i talk my hands are full of movement... its a born in me thing.. i'm trying very hard to change now....
After 1/2 hour going back to the basic of sub-division, which i still sucks *sighz*, we started our normally lesson for the day. Rhythm Studies. Generally means reading the notes and playing. Of course at a start he gave us very simple notes. Which is in 4/4 even quavers for a bar follow by a bar of crochet.
After the simple rhytm is a more complicated one.. which is a quaver and 2 semi-quaver to form one beat (See image below). And the quaver is with the right hand and so is the 1st semi-quaver... so as usual the brain need sometime to get use to that... tend to wanna go alternate.. and have to try very hard to curb the left hand from moving again.. after a while manage to get it.. but still will tend to "lose it" after a while and when not concentrating hard enuff... and i got corrected for my "sloppy" stick control again.. sighz.....
and i think i will be changing school... cos the fees really is sucking my blood.... but my instructor is nice enuff to say he will still teach us properly even when he noes we might not be there for long... i like it... when he says yes he is earning a living.. but he is not out to just make money... he is trying to strike a balance between music and money... its good tat he has such thinking.. hope he can continue to persever on with this kind of thinking... cos i really hated schools and instructor that become very commercialise... just like wat happen to my dance teacher... sighz....
